Greetings and welcome to Friday!
Thanks to all who attended yesterday’s Board of Directors meeting. It was a great discussion on this year’s grant program and how we’ll press forward once we get the funding guidance from the Commissioners.
This week, we’re doing an initial test-drive of a new update format, organized by topics, not person. Let us know what you think and as always, we welcome your suggestions!
Here’s our EDALC update for the week:
====
Blue Economy/O2IH::
Paul – Mark Farley and I met with Jenny Glass of the Cascades West Economic Development District to get them up to speed with our upcoming O2IH work and to invite her to be part of our leadership and planning team. She graciously accepted, so now we have all three coastal EDDs on board. I also worked with Sherry DeLeon of Sequoia Consulting on the first steps of getting the 501c3 process rolling and have some draft by-laws to review next week. With some feedback from Mark, I refined my “Intro to O2IH” presentation that I’ll be presenting at the OEDA conference on Tuesday.
Sarah – I read the “Fishing Industry Economic Activity Trends in Newport” report from Midwater Trawlers Cooperative on Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Broadband::
Paul – This week, I met with the Solarity team in advance of next week’s kick off for the EDA-funded regional broadband planning work, to give them a little better picture of Lincoln County.
Communication/Marketing::
Paul – This week, we set up advertising in the News-Times for the Summit (the first ad went out today), created a tall graphic for a stand-up trade show banner for EDALC (for things like the Summit and our Oct. 25th event). I also worked with Sherry from SmiesDesign (she designed our new logo back in 2020) to create an initial set of “Work Play Live” badge graphics that we’re turning into round stickers – you saw a pair of those in our Board packet this week.
Sarah – I wrote a MailChimp newsletter for the upcoming economic summit on Monday and Tuesday that was released on Wednesday. I finished a press release for the Economic Summit on Monday. I posted on our Facebook page about the upcoming economic summit event and wrote all the upcoming posts for the next week since I will be at a conference and Leadership Lincoln. I sent an event description and ad to the Oregon Coast Visitor’s Association because they offered to include it in their press release. I made a promotional video for the economic summit and posted it on Facebook on Thursday.
Community Connecting::
Leslie – Today, the Juntos en Colaboración core team met for the first time in person since we began working together back in June 2020. Folks from OSU Extension, OSU College of Public Health and Human Services, and Olalla’s Arcoíris Cultural met for lunch at Local Ocean (our Lincoln County Health Department counterparts weren’t able to join – hopefully next time!). Here’s evidence we finally convened in person!
Earlier this week, I metwith Newport Bike & Ped Committee member and OSU Marine Mammal Institute employee, Minda Stiles, to discuss mutual City Committee interests, challenges, and challenge-solving ideas.
I forgot to mention in our EDALC Board meeting that Vision Advisory Committee Work Groups are gathering information for the 2022 Vision Progress Report. We’re seeking Highlights (accomplishments) and Needs and Gaps aligned with the Vision’s six Focus Areas. The Vision 2040 is so wide-scoping, chances are that any/all successes your organization has accomplished in 2022 are Vision-forwarding! So, if you have existing updates on Greater Newport Area community-supporting projects that happened in 2022, please send them my way!

Creative Economies::
Sarah – I sent some pictures and information about the new ART Toledo murals to the Oregon Coast Visitors Association for their online Art Trail. I updated the ART Toledo website on Friday.
Events::
Paul & Sarah – We reached out to the Agate Beach Best Western to outline the layout of the Summit event room and selected the lunch menu options. We also pulled in the last of the speaker images and bios and ordered folders, badge holders and all that miscellaneous event jazz.
Sarah – I ordered stickers, found our name badges, and discussed materials with the Newport chamber for the Economic summit.
Paul – On Wednesday, I trekked to Salem for the Oregon Aquaculture Conference. I learned a ton that will certainly be useful in our coming “Blue” work and attended a fascinating session on financing options for aquaculture ventures. I also was part of a panel presenting on aquaculture business planning.
Organizational Development::
Sarah – I added all the Leadership Lincoln dates for the year to the calendar (to avoid future scheduling issues) and prepared for the Leadership Lincoln class next Wednesday. I read the “Most Dynamic Micropolitans in America” report from Heartland Forward on Tuesday.
Our Communities::
Paul & Sarah – Tom Fullmer (Waldport Chamber) stopped by with folks opening up a new restaurant and gallery space in Waldport (which will have a bit of a Cajun spin to it). They will be providing the food for the October 25th breakfast event.
Project Work::
Paul – I built a first draft of a new 2022 Community and Economic Development Grant Program application in SmartSheet this afternoon. I’ll still need to work on the grant budget item so that it doesn’t squish all the info into a single cell, but that’s a battle for another day.
Sarah – I updated the Oregon Prospector entries on Wednesday and Friday. I completed the “Major Employers in Lincoln County” report on Friday.
Rural Opportunity Initiative/Entrepreneurship::
Sarah – I added more business and entrepreneur classes to our opportunities for entrepreneur section of our website on Tuesday and Friday.
Upcoming::
OEDA Annual Conference: October 9-11th, North Bend. Paul will be attending and will be presenting as part of the High Impact Projects panel.
The People’s Coast Summit: October 11-13th, Yachats. Sarah will be attending at least one day.
