Paul’s week:
Building My Network – I had a great Zoom call with Sandra Easdale from the Cascades West Council of Governments. She took the time to go over their portfolio of loan instruments available to Lincoln County businesses – I have to say that I was amazed and impressed with how many different tools there are to provide access to capital for all sizes of businesses. Doug Holbrook and I also connected this morning and had a lively conversation on all things Lincoln County, and we’re both looking forward to do some research on some innovative approaches to local investing and crowd funding relating to affordable and workforce housing (he’s buying me a book!).
Stakeholder Listening Sessions – The four regional sessions will be held next week on Thursday and Friday. Frank Burris, from OSU Extension, will be facilitating – Commissioner Hunt will offer the introductions, and I’ll offer any facilitation assistance needed, plus will be creating and running the live “Priority polls”. I’ve attached the invite spreadsheet and the Zoom info for the four meetings is below – I hope your schedule will allow you to make one of these sessions:

Regional Economic Development – I completed a survey this week to help our regional Council of Governments evaluate the types of services and support they will provide to the region in the future. Regional economic development practitioners received a draft of the strategic priorities for the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy five year update and then we help a spirited Zoom discussion facilitated by Mike Corwin – I think we are getting a real sense of how that planning tool should (and should not) evolve and develop.
Community and Economic Development Grant – Based on Commissioner Hunt’s comments yesterday, it looks like we’ll be moving forward with the twelve applications we received (Doug will let us know otherwise after their Monday staff meeting). If that remains the case, we’ll have the grants and scoring spreadsheets out to the board next week.
Organizational Goals and Projects – Thanks so much for the great discussion! I’m spending some time today and next week updating and enhancing our short goals and projects documents and will get a revision off to you soon for comments and suggestions.
Taft Sizzle Sheet – I completed the verbiage for the various sections of the four page “sizzle sheet” and worked through several revisions of the text with Alison and Ed. Currently, we’re working on what stats we should call out for maximum impact. A fun fact (it’s going to be one of the stats): Mo’s on the bay served over a quarter million servings of chowder in 2019 – yowza! Once we get the stats in place (probably early next week), it’ll go to Ed’s team for some gorgeous layout magic.
EDO Funding Models – As I mentioned before the start of yesterday’s BoD meeting, I’m doing some research on other successful funding models for small economic development organizations – so far, I’ve reached out to Coleen Padilla from SOREDI, Kate Porsche in Corvallis, the McMinnville Economic Development Partnership and the OEDA. I’ll keep you posted on what I learn in this process.
What a great and productive board meeting yesterday – I’m certainly very proud to be working for this organization! Thanks for all that you are doing out there! Please reach out to me if you need anything at all.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
-Paul 🙂
