Greetings and welcome to Friday and welcome to May!
A big thanks to all who made our May EDALC Board of Directors meeting on Zoom yesterday! I always get so energized when we come together to sharpen the EDALC saw!
Here’s our update for this week:
Blue Economy::
This week, Mark Farley, Bob and myself met to talk through a potential NOAA Phase 2 Climate Accelerator application that would be submitted by Washington’s Maritime Blue (covering Alaska, Washington and Oregon). I also met with Even Hall to talk through his progress and vision for Blue incubator space on McLean Point. We also received our first draft of the NOAA economic impact study from Eastern Research Group today – we’ll review that next week. – Paul
Broadband::
I wrote a letter of support to the Oregon Broadband Office for a CTSI broadband infrastructure application. – Paul
Community Connecting::
No update from Leslie for now – she’s serving on a jury this week.
Events::
I fleshed out my main talking points for the Oregon Coast Economic Summit presentation I’ll be doing next Wednesday, and put together a first draft of the presentation – a little tweaking on Monday, and it should be good to go. – Paul
If you want more info on this summit, put on by the Coastal Caucus, here’s the link:

This week I did event coordination for the Youth Entrepreneurship event on May 15th and the YBEF/EDALC board celebration on June 27th. I also did some preliminary research into some timber and fishing data points in preparation for Paul’s presentation at the Oregon Coast Economic Summit happening next Wednesday, May 8th! – Sarah
Marketing & Communication::
I put together a short “upcoming events” MailChimp newsletter that will be sent out Monday and Stacie and I worked on a social media plan for Economic Development Week next week! – Sarah
Planned, created, and scheduled social media content for Economic Development Week. Met with Sarah to review plan. (please like and share as appropriate!) – Stacie
Received access to WordPress, and Sarah provided training on website changes. We also started planning some changes as part of the upcoming annual website audit – Stacie and Sarah
Organizational Development::
This week, I wrapped up my initial budget draft work. Michael and I had a good long meeting going over the budget this week, and he had some great suggestions for clarity. I’ll get the budget (approved during yesterday’s BoD meeting) cleaned up and formatted nicely and get it out to the Board. – Paul
We’re testing out the new Monday template by using it to manage the Annual YBEF/EDALC meeting work. Also created some examples for tasks and non-event projects and got started on a dashboard to provide an overview of everyone’s work – Stacie
Today, Sarah, Stacie and I met online with Sam Laurel, a college student attending St. Olaf College in Minnesota (he’s Newport born and bred). Leslie made the introduction. We’re exploring bringing him on for a short research-focused summer internship in July, when he’s back in Newport. – Paul
PIER Program::
Yesterday, our Lincoln Count PIER (Planning, Infrastructure & Economic Revitalization) Selection Committee met with a new team from Oregon Housing & Community Services. It seems like OHCS is doing a reset on aspects of the program – which is welcome, since it was seeming like an overly clunky process for something that was meant to be truly helpful and local. Lincoln County has about $2.6 million in PIER funds for this program. – Paul
Project Work::
This week I updated the opportunities for entrepreneurs slider and Oregon Prospector listings. Stacie and I made some updates to the EDALC website, updated my expense report, and made a document about the economic vitality report card in preparation for a potential intern we met with on Friday. – Sarah
Supporting Partners::
OCCC – This week, the Pre-Apprenticeship Taskforce met to get an update on student recruitment and also on the delivery of ten Oculus VR systems for virtual training and career exploration. I also wrote a letter of support for a funding request for the welding program in Toledo. – Paul
Upcoming::
DON’T FORGET – next week is Economic Development Week!! We’ll be doing a lot of social media posting – be sure to click and Like the posts.
Save the date for the evening of June 27th for the co EDALC/YBEF annual meeting and celebration.
Also, there will be NO EDALC BoD meetings in June or July (with the exception of our annual meeting) – enjoy the freedom!
As a reminder – your Board of Directors resource page is here:
Thanks for ALL that you are doing out there! Please reach out to me if you need anything at all. Have a wonderful weekend!
Cheers,
-Paul 🙂
