Greetings and welcome to Friday!
Don’t forget that tomorrow is Bloom Newport at the PAC (3-7pm). Leslie and Sarah will be hosting an EDALC table there. Here’s a link to this awesome event:
Here’s our update for this week:
Blue Economy::
This week, Sarah and I (as well as Mark Farley and Bob, in a separate process) reviewed the draft external-facing and internal-facing NOAA economic impact report documents and submitted our comments, corrections and thoughts to the Eastern Research Group. Next week, we’ll meet with ERG to discuss and review their revisions. – Paul
Broadband::
This week was our monthly Broadband Action Team meeting. We discussed BTAP awards (our region did not receive any of these technical assistance rewords in the first round – though three applications were submitted). There is the possibility of more funding coming down the pike to enable more awards. The BDP grant applications have been submitted (the first round of infrastructure grants) – $445M in applications for $157M in funding. One application was submitted form Benton & Lincoln counties. Currently, there is a process underway to eliminate duplicate addresses from competing applications (they call this the “curing process”). – Paul
Community Connecting::
One of the ideas now rolling out of my (very full) mental parking lot is an “action portal” concept, aiming to help non-Tribal folk move beyond Land Acknowledgements to self-educating, donating, volunteering, and otherwise helpfully participating in public-facing, Tribal Organization-aligned efforts.
Why an Action Portal? Sometimes, well-meaning folks can unintentionally cause additional burdens or harm to Tribal Organizations and Members in their efforts to “help” or learn more. Also, well-meaning non-Tribal organizations sometimes create Land Acknowledgements and stop there, without giving folks actionable steps that help build understanding and relationships, or otherwise contribute to efforts aligned with the Tribal Organizations of the land they’re on. To fill in gaps between understanding, intent, impact, and capacity, an action portal website aims to make it easier and less burdensome for folks to connect with public-facing Tribal Organization’s education resources and opportunities.
The EDALC team and I have received approval to draft a CTSI-aligned action site, and we’ll keep you posted as we progress.

Creative Economies::
I edited the vendor registration form for the AOB event. – Sarah
Entrepreneurship::
This week I resent invitations for the YEP event, got the event supplies together at the EDALC office, and prepared the presentations and programs. The YEP pitch competition on Wednesday was a success and the student entrepreneurs were wonderful! The winner was a Waldport student pitching his business of being the coast’s only taxidermist! – Sarah
The whole EDALC crew (as well as the SBDC crew) were in force for the *amazing* pitch event in the Hatfield auditorium. I had the honor of serving as the emcee, Sarah ran the computer (presentations and videos), Stacie ran the lights and took pics and Leslie worked the crowd. The whole team worked on set-up and teardown. What an incredible, affirming event!! – Paul
Events::
Paul and I visited the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club on Tuesday in preparation for the YBEF/EDALC annual celebration and I contacted some local caterers. – Sarah
Marketing & Communication::
Posted to FB and IG stories during YEP event on 5/15. Reposted LCSD and OCCC posts about the event on FB and LI. Created a unique follow-up post on EDALC Instagram with partners and vendors tagged. Shared pics with SBDC. Reposted for Bloom Newport. – Stacie
Organizational Development::
Monday.com – Refined structure + dashboard and resolved some permissions issues on specific boards. Will keep adjusting as we ramp up our use of the tool. Created documentation for team training next week. – Stacie
I have been working through several migration tests. We’re looking at moving from Office 365 to the Google Workspace platform for EDALC (MUCH better at collaboration!). – Paul
Project Work::
I worked on the major employers report and made updates to Oregon Prospector. – Sarah
Created project in Monday.com for land action portal site, began planning and brainstorming potential domains with Paul and Leslie. Set up website dev training session for team next Thursday. – Stacie
Supporting Partners::
Marys Peak to Coast Scenic Byway – Yesterday, I travelled to Philomath for an initial meeting kicking-off post-pandemic efforts to re-engage with the priorities and plans for the byway. EDALC was an initial partner and former Director Kerry Kemp had a lot to do with the Byway getting approved. It was a gorgeous day yesterday, so I got to drive it on my way top the meeting. – Paul
As a reminder – your Board of Directors resource page is here:
