Greetings and welcome to Friday and welcome to July!!
I wanted to give a huge shout-out to our amazing team: Leslie and Sarah! They both did an awesome job presenting interesting, thought-provoking and relevant presentations at our annual meeting! Also, they were incredible mixologists! Way to go you two! You rock! Some event pics are attached!
Also, for the moment at least, Leslie is done with her year-long grant-funded position as our EDALC Community Connector. She did a truly amazing and inspirational job! There is still a little money left over from her contract that Leslie will be using to support some of her ongoing work over the summer. She’ll still be very engaged with the EDALC team, with the Oregon Cluster Initiative and other projects – as well as leaning into her role as server (and part owner!) of Local Ocean. It’s our sincere hope to have Leslie back on the team this Fall.
First, some “start of the fiscal year” information for you all:

Here’s our staff update for the week (and last week as well):
Events::
On Saturday, July 1st, ART Toledo held the first Art, Oysters and Brews event of the summer. It was a great event and a perfect sunny, breezy day. Sarah was on-site early Saturday to help set up the event. I set up and ran the sound for the musicians and was the noon performer. – Paul
I sent Rogue a thank you card for their donation for the YBEF event, and created a video for the Art, Oysters & Brews event last Saturday. Lastly, I began to work on an EDALC summer newsletter and updates for the website. – Sarah
You can check out the AESOME video that Sarah shot and edited on the event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nzFTYBTQ-8
Innovation:
Yesterday, we had our July meeting of the core team for the Cascades West Innovation Hub project. We reviewed the first sections of the innovation hub report and discussed the logistics of some upcoming regional listening sessions. – Paul
Organizational Development::
Last week, I put together our annual report (it’s attached to this update if you didn’t pick one up at least week’s annual meeting). I also put together our end of year financial report and started to get things set up for our new fiscal year in QuickBooks and also my bill and receipt record keeping. – Paul
Research & Data::
On Thursday and Friday this week, I put together a report of building permits in Lincoln county from the past ten years for a market research organization. I began researching and putting together some data points for an economic vitality report card. – Sarah
Supporting Our Partners::
Cascades West Council of Governments/Economic Development District – I was in Albany on Friday, June 30th for three rounds of final interviews for the COG’s Community and Economic Development Director position. We interviewed three strong, but very different candidates. COG Director Ryan Vogt has a tough decision ahead of him! – Paul
Lincoln County – I had a great, long conversation with Ernest Stephens of Morant McLeod on the economic development aspect of the homeless/housing strategic plan they are putting together for the county. Some very interesting and potentially impactful approaches! I hope to be able to join in on upcoming finance & economics workgroup meetings down the road. – Paul
OCCC Foundation – I met this week with Jeanette Campagna to continue planning the OCCC Foundation board retreat that will be held on August 3rd (before our BoD meeting). We’ll be facilitating part of that retreat. It looks like we’ve got an engaging and results-focused event shaping up. -Paul
YBEF – Last week, we had our joint YBEF/EDALC annual meeting at the new Port of Newport offices. I think it was a great event and it worked very well to combined the two annual meetings into one fun event. Did you try those Italian cocktails? – Paul
As a reminder – your Board of Directors resource page is here:
As another reminder/FYI – Susan and I will be off on vacation from the 10th to the 18th. We’re headed to Leadville, CO to test our altitude acclimation skills and to have a drink (or two) at the saloon where Doc Holiday used to hang out!
Have wonderful weekend! Thanks for ALL that you are doing out there! Please reach out to me if you need anything at all. Have a wonderful weekend!
Cheers,
-Paul 🙂
