Greetings and welcome to a damp Friday the 13th. Avoid those ladders and black cats today!
Sarah is back at it after her overseas holiday trek to Italy and Switzerland. To paraphrase Dickens, it sounds like it was “the best of times and the worst of times.” I’ll let her tell the tale.
Here’s our weekly staff update:
Blue Economy::
Mark Farley, Connor Nolan and myself were on a panel on Wednesday morning on the Blue Economy for Leadership Lincoln (which was at Hatfield this week). It was a good session with some great Q&A time. – Paul
Broadband::
I’ve started pulling together the email invite list and the verbiage to invite local leaders to a January 25th “Broadband 101” run by Solarity. That invite should go out early Tuesday. – Paul
Communication/Marketing::
I posted an ad on Facebook for Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Big Blue Film Festival and shared Casey Miller’s podcast episode with Paul. – Sarah
Yesterday, I was a guest on Commissioner Casey Miller’s morning radio show, giving a general overview of what we’re doing at EDALC, and then we did a deeper dive into the Blue Economy and what it means to our region. You can see an edited video of part of the show at the link below. – Paul
Community Connecting::
Self-evaluations make me reminisce about my interdisciplinary college days at Fairhaven College in Bellingham, Washington. We didn’t have grades there, only evaluations. I appreciate that the EDALC team values the process of reflecting on what went well, what was challenging, and how all those experiences will help us each improve our work ahead in 2023. Do you have any feedback for me? I love feedback, especially constructive feedback that includes ideas and suggestions on how I can improve my work and positive impact in the community. Please email me if you’d like to share your feedback: leslie.p.newport@gmail.com
I’ve been reconnecting with collaborative community folks over the past weeks, checking in on their programs and sharing connections and ideas whenever possible. Please give a look at my full report for details and more info:

Community and Economic Development Grant::
We’re starting to get a few of the scoresheets in from our Board members. Thanks so much! If you can plan to all have those in to me by January 25th, that would be wonderful. – Paul
Creative Economies::
I added the new volunteer form to the art Toledo website and made a few edits to the “opportunities” page. I began to work on the ART Toledo staging site and looked at a theme demo for the site on Friday. – Sarah
Organizational Development::
On Tuesday, I prepped for my Leadership Lincoln class that I attended on Wednesday. I researched entrepreneurial and networking event ideas on Tuesday. I worked on my self evaluation on Thursday and Friday. – Sarah
The EDALC staff is working on self-evaluation reports for the first half of FY 2022-23. We should have those wrapped up by the end of next week. – Paul
Our Communities::
Newport – Both Paula and I were at a meeting this morning in Spencer’s office with Lance Vanderbeck (Newport airport manager) and Spencer to discuss commercial air service at the Newport airport, as well as it’s potential (positive) impact for NOAA. Lance and Spencer did a great job getting me up to speed, and it looks like we’ll be part of the conversation going forward. We all came away with some proactive tasks. – Paul
Project Work::
On Tuesday and Thursday, I updated the opportunities for entrepreneurs slider. I researched other communities’ park land acquisition plans and then found a state of Oregon grant opportunity for a potential park location in Waldport. I updated Oregon Prospector listings on Thursday and Friday. I completed the government organization meeting list on Thursday. I updated the average rent of commercial buildings in Lincoln Count spreadsheet on Friday. – Sarah
Supporting and Connecting with Partners::
After my radio show with Casey, we were able to sit down for about an hour and talk economic development, shared priorities and EDALC-county collaboration down the road. I also had a wonderfully productive working lunch with Administrator Johnson at Clearwater yesterday. – Paul
I’m currently working with Jalene Case to help her plan and deliver a day-long retreat for the Samaritan North leadership team (on February 24th) – I’m tweaking some of my Creativity Boot Camp sections to dovetail with Jalene’s work and better fit into Samaritan’s professional efforts and goals for the day. Looking so forward to it! – Paul
Upcoming::
EDALC and the OCCC ill be hosting the Q1 Northwest Oregon Works board meeting in Waldport on January 27th. It’ll be a hybrid meeting with an anticipated 30+ folks in physical attendance. We met with the NOW staff today for a pre-planning logistics meeting. I’ll be doing a short update on Lincoln County economic development during the meeting as well. SO great to have the space and ability to collaborate like this! – Paul
As a reminder – your Board of Directors resource page is here:
Remember, there will be NO EDALC BoD meeting in January, as per past tradition. Our February meeting will be on Thursday, February 2nd (3:30pm, via Zoom) and it will be our grant review meeting.
Thanks for ALL that you are doing out there! Please reach out to me if you need anything at all. Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
Cheers,
-Paul 🙂
