Greetings and welcome to the first Friday in September!

Yesterday was our September Board of Directors meeting – thanks to all who could make the Zoom. Staff will work on the approved bylaw change to add Director representation for Education and CTSI, plus creating the new “advisory” member designation, based off of the Aquarium’s approach. Attached to this update is the project overview discussed in the meeting.

As Marshall reminded us at the BoD meeting, next week (on Thursday, September 11th at the Newport campus) is the ground breaking for the new OCATT building – let’s get the whole EDALC crew there to cheer on this amazing addition to our education and workforce development systems!

This weekend begins the annual two month post-summer conference dash all across the state – below outlines the conferences the EDALC staff will be attending (and a few Directors) through November:

List of conferences

  • Sept. 5 & 6: OCCA Board Leadership & Governance Summit – Salem – Paul
  • Sept. 25 & 26: Coastal Caucus Economic Summit – North Bend – Paul
  • Oct. 3-6: Ford Family Foundation Rural Community Building Summit – Bend – Paul & Leslie

  • Nov. 5 & 6: OCCA Annual Conference – Hood River – Paul

Here’s our weekly team update:

    • Partner Support/Community Support

    • Blue Economy/O2IH
      • Challenger Biosciences – Paul and Mark Farley met with Don Gerhart of CB to continue their planning discussions on the creation of the Toledo–Newport–Siletz Bio-Manufacturing Hub. Paul also sent out a funding request to Schmidt Marine Technology Partners for $25,000 to help in preparing a project overview and “pitch deck” for the effort.
      • Stacie updated/reorganized the Monday.com board for O2IH work to better support the ongoing nature of content creation and approval as well as the work to launch the 501c3.
    • Entrepreneurship
      • BizOR TA Grant – The Technical Assistance grant application was submitted to Business Oregon last night. EDALC is the lead agency with the Oregon Coast Small Business Development Center and the Tillamook Coast Visitors Association as our partners. The grant budget was $224,250.
  • Newledo – Paul, Stacie and Sarah met with Nicole of the Newledo hub to discuss three potential microenterprises she is interested in starting.
    • ROI – The team has pulled together a preliminary list of projects for the next grant application cycle. Over the next few weeks, we’ll refine that into the work plan and budget that Business Oregon requires.
  • Core Economic Development Services
    • Major Employers Report – Sarah continued to work on the major employers report data collection.
    • Oregon Prospector – Sarah updated Oregon Prospector listings.
  • Community Connecting
    • Planning steps for Café Aquarium 2025 – This effort took the majority of Leslie’s week, and included:
  • An event walk-through at the Aquarium with Jeremy Burke and Kerry Carlin-Morgan
  • Working with the Aquarium’s Exhibits and Graphics Coordinator, Olivia Lott, on the Event Passport layout and timeline for printing.
  • Sending out event details to 30 tabling organization representatives
  • Seeking additional sponsor funds and in-kind donations to support catering and raffle incentive awards (the team is still gathering funding and in-kind support – please contact Leslie if you can help!)
  • Seeking bilingual volunteers for event support
  • Finalizing catering menu for Aquarium team
  • Meetings with Latine Organization leads for translation reviews on documents, surveys, and concept clarity improvements
  • Email correspondences galore, for all of the above
  • …and a lot more!
    • Organizational Management
  • Marketing & Communication
  • Stacie shared relevant partner/regional posts on various social media channels – as well as the usual Friday roundup of central coast goings on.
  • Admin
  • Policy Manual – EDALC received a draft policy manual (sent out as part of the digital packet). The staff will review over the next two weeks. If there is any Director feedback or question, please forward those to Paul.
  • QuickBooks – Paul finished his epic update to QuickBooks, fully syncing with our operational checking account after the Fitzsimmons team was done with their work in the system for our last tax return (and the changes in First Security’s online banking system) – and the bank transactions and QuickBooks once again match to the penny – future updating should be a breeze.
  • Strategic Planning – Paul received the strategic planning proposal from Jacobson Rural Solutions last next – he’ll review next week and pursue some small grant inquiries to pay for the process.
      • Stacie completed the BoD meeting minutes for the 9/4 meeting.
      • Stacie updated Monday.com documentation and used this week’s team work session to answer questions/help with project tracking setup and updates.

That’s it for this week. Thanks for ALL that you are doing out there! Keep us posted if you have anything you want us to share – we love hearing from you! Have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,

-The EDALC Team (Paul, Sarah, Leslie and Stacie)
