Greetings and welcome to Friday! Hard to believe this is the last weekend in August!
Here’s our EDALC update for the week:

Sarah’s Update:
This week I began with finishing the Chalk the Block video and exporting it out into a file. I continued working on the ART Toledo website by creating a new “Volunteer” page and added the different volunteer forms the ART Toledo group asked me to add to the website. Afterwards, I made sure everything I added to the website was mobile friendly. I began researching some properties for Ms. Waters who called asking about potential locations for a new coffee shop. Later, I wrote a notice of lease termination letter to send to Mishey Real Estate letting them know about our office move. Next, I called the property managers for the potential coffee shop locations and discussed with them if the owners would be willing to lease their property. Later, I updated the opportunities for entrepreneurs slider and researched some other online art auctions to better understand how to develop one for ART Toledo. At the end of my day, I called all the remaining businesses on the major employers in Lincoln County list.
On Wednesday, I cleaned up the board meeting notes and finalized those for the next meeting. Later, I made a few edits to the lease termination letter and recalled all the businesses again. Afterwards, I contacted some local moving companies about sending us a quote for moving our office to Waldport. I also researched if any of the local donation centers pick up items and found that Habitat for Humanity will come pick up our remaining office furniture if I make an appointment. At the end of my day, I made more edits and additions to the ART Toledo website and I emailed businesses for the major employers spreadsheet.
On Thursday, I attended the Art, Oysters & Brews subcommittee meeting and the Silent Auction subcommittee meeting after. Later, I reviewed the grant budget for the SBA that Paul has been working on. Next, I researched some auction software and other online resources for developing an online auction. I also emailed the Program Manager for the Oregon Arts Commission to see if she has any insight into the most effective and efficient ways to create and run an online art auction. Later, I contacted more property managers for Ms. Waters and responded to her with some questions and property information. At the end of my day, I went to a meeting with Paul at the Newport Chamber of Commerce office about the Economic Summit happening in October.

Leslie’s Update:
What a week! What a month.
I started my week helping folks from The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI) catch waves in their backyard “big pool” (the ocean). I saw entire families sharing their first rides together, knowing that they were launching a lifetime passion. We heard “this is my new favorite sport,” more than once. The weather and wave conditions were perfect for learning, and we received constant positive feedback that got me all ferklempt. Each day, we had more than enough volunteers who all left their experiences beaming and wanting to return for more. It felt magical – as if every moment was meant to be, precisely as it happened.
I just ended my week with a paddle-out memorial for local surf legend, John Gillette, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this summer. He was one of my favorite surfers to share the lineup with – he was always stoked and always finding a way to share compliments or learn about common ground topics with anyone in the water. He seemed just as blissed out to witness others’ surfing as he did catching his own waves. He was a true surf community builder, and the turnout for his Fogust morning paddle-out showed how many lives he touched – and I know only a tiny percentage of those he positively influenced were able to join. He will be greatly missed, but I know he’ll always be with so many folks every time they paddle out to their favorite shared surf spots.
This week also brought other unexpected losses to our community, and my heart goes out to all those who lost family members and friends. The bittersweetness of sharing lives with others and the inevitability of losing them both fills me with grief and reminds me to do the best I can do in the present: making connections between people who are passionate about aligned causes, standing up for and supporting folks and organizations who help others selflessly, sharing successes of complex challenges surmounted, and learning from the struggles that haven’t yet been eased. And, perhaps most importantly, I can find and share passion-driven experiences that also fulfill human needs that all folks have in common. This is a long-winded weekly/monthly update, as this month has inspired me to go deep. I hope those who persevere in reading will be rewarded with some rejuvenating, motivational ideas.

Paul’s Update:
Blue Economy – This week, we had two more go-rounds with our “super high C” (from the DISC profile) SBA Grants Management Officer, and we had a Zoom meeting earlier in the week. While he is asking for excessive detail (even the OSU grant folks think so), I’m putting things into the language he wants to move us forward. We *think* we’re there with yesterday’s “version 5” submission of our budget narrative. Mark Farley helped me with some language on “computation methods” to justify costs, and that passed muster, so we are getting there. Also, I’ve been working with a local entrepreneur and the founder of Net Your Problem, and it looks like they’ve nailed down a deal for a local Net Your Problem net and tackle recycling outpost in either Newport or Toledo. Next week, we’ll help them try to find a warehouse spot.
Waldport Office – This week, we signed the MOU with OCCC for the Waldport space. We’ll be paying $200/month for utility sharing. Looking at our Newport utility bills, we’d been paying around $187/month, so that’s pretty much a wash, and we won’t be paying the $600/month rent. I sent the notice that Sarah crafted to Mishey Real Estate, and we started planning the logistics of the move.
Economic Summit – Sarah and I met with Jeanette and Robbi at the Newport Chamber yesterday to nail down some more details on the October 20th summit. Marketing starts in earnest next week (with a save the date blast). I’m organizing the panelists, and I’ve got about 50% locked in so far… hopefully we’ll get them all set early next week.
Leadership Lincoln – Today, I was part of a panel at the Newport Chamber luncheon focusing on Leadership Lincoln (with Mayor Cross, Laura Kimberly, Jason Holland and Michael Pace – Toledo police chief) – a great event and with a week to go until enrollment closes for the 22-23 year, there are only four open slots left.
Economic Development Storytime – In this week’s economic development storytime, we talked about “landing a whale” in economic development speak (basically that super-rare huge business). I talked about our work back in Illinois to land Cloverleaf Cold Storage and how regions compete agains each other, as well as the good, bad and ugly of business incentives as enticements.
