Greetings and welcome to Friday!

Here’s our EDALC update for the week:

====

Sarah’s Update:

This week I began with adding a new Spanish Business resource to the EDALC website. Afterwards, I updated the major employers in Lincoln County spreadsheet. I began to work on the minutes from the last EDALC Board of Directors meeting. Later, I edited the ART Toledo website and created the biography pages for the new phantom gallery artists.

On Tuesday, I updated some Oregon Prospector entries and continued to add to the Board meeting minutes. Afterwards, I made a time off request spreadsheet for EDALC staff. I read some new articles posted on the reinventing rural site about helping rural businesses and wrote a new opportunity for entrepreneurs slide that I added to the website on Wednesday. At the end of the day, Paul, Susan, and I visited our new office in Waldport, I am very excited to move in! Later, I worked on a list of per diem rates at port cities on the Oregon Coast.

I started off Wednesday by updating the opportunities for entrepreneurs slider on the EDALC website. Next, I looked for policies and approaches to choosing grant awardees. Afterwards, I created an EDALC grant application to be used for future Blue economy work grants. The rest of my workday I finished the board meeting notes.

On Thursday, I went to the ART Toledo meeting and discussed new projects with Lisa and Kim. Later, I updated the ART Toledo website based off requests from that meeting and added the new phantom gallery information to the website. Afterwards, I created a video for the Chalk the Block event to add to the website next week.

Leslie’s Update:

Hello everyone!

I feel like I’m still mid-week, as I’m almost mid-way through a week of one of my favorite community building experiences: sharing my favorite pastime (spoiler alert: surfing) with folks from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI).

I am a volunteer and board member for All Are We Water Collective (AAWWC), whose Mission is: All Are We Water Collective works in partnership with Tribal and Indigenous communities on the West Coast and in Maui to co-create therapeutic outdoor educational and recreational programs for families. These programs promote healthy lifestyles, uplift Native wisdom of the environment and inspire a sense of responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. We amplify indigeneity, diversifying our surfing communities, and strengthen community relations between Indigenous Nations and the non-Native community members who live on their ancestral lands.

It is our first year back with CTSI since 2019 (thanks, COVID), with a reformatted surfing program. What used to be a free, one-day, large group event each summer is now a week-long series of free, half-day, small group lessons.

Paul’s Update:

Blue Economy – Earlier this week, I had a “meet and greet” Zoom call with Nate Gilman, RAIN’s new “Maritime Innovator in Residence” to talk Blue Economy efforts and where our work may overlap in the months to come. I also finally heard back from our new SBA grant representative on our Congressionally Directed Spending award. Apparently, the new rep is a micro-detail oriented reviewer and he shot back some bit of our budget narrative that were already approved. Mark Farley helped me work through some edits to tune the narrative more towards “SBA federal grant speak” and away from a commonsense overview of what we’ll be doing and how much it’ll cost (one that was already approved by the SBA), but I got that wrapped up in a nice bow and sent off yesterday, though it took more of my week than I was expecting! Always getting halfway there!

Potential Newport Hotel – I had a meeting a Newport City Hall this week with Spencer, Derrick and Mayor Sawyer. We talked through the potential new hotel development and potential incentives as well as could the Enterprise Zone be brought to bear. I love the kind of economic development brainstorming sessions with key decision makers. I’ve got some research to do next week and then I’ll report back to the municipal team.

Waldport Office – This week, I picked up key cards and keys from Chris, OCCC’s facilities manager. On Tuesday, Sarah, Susan (spouse and office feng shui expert) and I trekked to Waldport to measure spaces and think through storage, flow, offices and such. Later in the week, I received the draft MOU from Birgitte and Dave and see no issues with it at all – what a great win-win! I shot back a few questions and we should be ready to sign any moment now.

Economic Summit – We did some more work on the design of October’s economic summit we’re doing in conjunction with the Newport Chamber and next week, I’ll set out doing the final panelist invites and then marketing can begin in earnest.

Leadership Lincoln – I was one of the panelists in a “get to know Leadership Lincoln” program that the Chamber put on Wednesday night. It’s amazing that this valuable program has been going on for over thirty years. I took the program back in the Fall of 2020 and we’ve got Sarah set up to start this September.

Economic Development Storytime – This week, I got to play storyteller and subjected Sarah and Mindy to a couple of stories of how rural economic development works, giving them some insight into the business attraction process and also helping an entrepreneur make a solid business decision. It’s always helpful for me to “tell the tale” to help me get a fresh perspective – and this time, it spurred on a fresh idea I’ll be pursuing next week.

As a reminder – your Board of Directors resource page is here:

Thanks for ALL that you are doing out there! Please reach out to me if you need anything at all.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,

-Paul 🙂
